Assessments

Your child will be continuously assessed by both of us.  There are two types of assessments: formative and summative.

Formative assessments include observation and note-taking, exit tickets, quick checks (thumbs up, thumbs down) and post-its.  These types of assessments allow us to know where your child is on their learning journey throughout the units and allow us to instruct to their needs.

Summative assessments are the "tests" at the ends of the units.  These are familiar to us as parents and adults.  Summative assessments also allow us to understand your child's understanding of a learning unit.

Put together, an overall grade on a report card relies heavily on formative assessments, as this is the day to day learning we observe and the data we collect.

Report card grades that rely on summative assessments are:
spelling tests
mastering math facts

Report card grades that rely heavily on formative assessments are:
comprehends what is read
